Eleana's Weekly Check In

  • Weight: 68 kg (- 2 kg)
  • Body Fat:
  • Waist: 30" (-2.5")
  • Hips: 42" (-1.5")
  • Thighs: 23 (- 0.5")
Let me start of by saying, this is no April Fool's joke... I am actually back on the right track again.

Hurrah! So nice to be seeing those numbers going down instead of up. I got a bit of an early April Fool's surprise by my weight on Sunday when the scales informed me I was 67 kg! I was back up to 68 kg the next day, but I SAW IT I SWEAR!

Anyway, my efforts to cut down on diet coke and other soft drinks is going surprisingly well! I haven't "slipped up" so to speak from being desperate for a can of the good stuff. I had one on purpose the other day to celebrate the fact I just turned in my graduation portfolio. Since then, nada. My addiction was clearly not as bad as I feared. It was much worse last year for sure when I was clawing at vending machines when I gave it up for a week.

I have not been eating out very much which has helped massively because I am always lured into buying those 1,600 calorie meals. I am still doing well with my water and I am also doing well by not having dessert after every meal (although I've had a couple brownies in a mug).

Now that it is finally warming up in Mississippi I need to get my running shoes back on and do some more exercise which I have roped my boyfriend into doing with me for company... and competition.

A Salad or Fries? Quality Counts

I wanted to write a mini post about calorie counting and food quality. I'm sure Jodie can weigh in with more knowledge than me, but here goes anyway.

I read an article recently where it compared salads you can find in local and chain restaurants and how these actually compare to unhealthy options in terms of calories. Taking Chili's Grill & Bar as the example, their Quesadilla Explosion Salad has 1440 calories. You may as well purchase a greasy burger.

Or should you?

Yes, you do need to be careful what the restaurant is classing as a "salad". The green part can't be a small addition to the plate.

But choosing a Chicken Caesar Salad (660 calories) is still ultimately going to do better for me than a Big Mac (550 calories). The quality of the food matters just as much as the calories, and I don't just mean eating a better quality burger pattie than what is found in the Big Mac. I mean that a salad or vegetables are going to be a better choice than a Big Mac. After all, vegetables and fruit contain calories. It's not as if the foods that are good for you are going to be 0 calories. Diet Coke isn't great for you and yet it's 0 calories. Many fruits actually contain sugars, so even those you still have to eat in moderation. But they are still a better choice than their sugary alternatives at the same calorie count.

It is important to consider what you are eating if you are calorie counting. A great app for that is Calorie Count. This is app is free but it also gives you an idea of how good your choice is, which My Fitness Pal does not do. When you select a food, it gives it a grade from A - F, and then you can judge for yourself whether the choice is going to be good for you, regardless of the calories.

As Jodie has often told us, use calorie counters as a guide, but not as your God. Counting calories is not the be-all-and-end-all of healthy eating. There are many other factors to consider which can considerably speed up and aid your weight loss.

Eleana's Weekly Check-In

  • Weight: 69 kg (- 1 kg)
  • Waist:30.5"
  • Hips: 42" (-1.5")
  • Thighs: 24 (+0.5")
Today was not the best day to measure myself. Yesterday I was 68kg! I must have quite the food baby.

My efforts have slowed down because I have somehow pulled a ligament in my knee, so I have to make sure that heals up first. It feels much better today compared to the rest of the week, but still not perfect. Once my knee is back in order I will be starting running! Yes, I'm actually going to do it. My boyfriend will also be joining me and he is in worse shape than me right now so that'll make me feel good. Plus I always do better when there is a level of competition happening.

I have just finished some important schoolwork! So I can dedicate a time again to working on health and fitness. I am still making some better choices than normal, I have done very well with cutting down on my diet coke consumption, and soft drinks as a whole. Better than I thought actually!

My confessions: I made British flapjacks because I found Golden Syrup in a Kroger in Memphis and fairly attacked those flapjacks with abandon. I also had a red velvet cupcake to celebrate finishing my important project. Guess I have some salads coming my way!

Eleana's Weekly Check-In

Current: March 19, 2014

  • Weight: 69 kg (- 1 kg)
  • Waist: 30.5" (-2")
  • Hips: 42" (-1.5")
  • Thighs: 23.75 (+0.25")
Me too, Jodie, slightly late. For me it's bad news, and not so bad news. I'm doing okay with my measurements although I seem to have gained 1 kg. However, that could be because of our fantastic meal at Ajax and the pain au chocolat (or chocolate bread, if you're that waitress who didn't understand me the first time when I spoke French). Not that it gained me 1 kg, but it would have affected my weight the next day with all the sodium and water retention.

I'm still making up for the overindulgent Spring Break, and have made the decision to cut out Diet Coke which I now severely regret seeing as I need it during my hard slog through my final portfolio, but oh well. I am definitely addicted to the fizzy stuff so I I feel like it could undo all my hard work, and everyone who successfully manoeuvres through a diet always said they cut out the soda.

In order to really convince myself, I'm going to do a little research on the effects of soda when I have a spare moment or want a break from my Masters work. I'll post the results of my research here so keep a look out!

I still want to do Ripped in 30 but until I get a handle on my work I don't want to half-heartedly start it because I'll be able to make up all kinds of excuses not to do it. But I will still go to Zumba so I'll see you on Friday girls!

Eleana's Weekly Check-In... only slightly delayed

I checked my measurements on Wednesday, but I've been putting off posting them out of busyness... and shame.
  • Weight: 68 kg (- 2 kg)
  • Body Fat:
  • Waist: 31.5" (-1")
  • Hips: 42" (-1.5")
  • Thighs: 24 (+0.5")
Yes I know. I've gained everywhere. Not back up to my original measurements but I've undone a lot of my good work. In my defense, it is Spring Break. And I did leave Oxford to go to Jackson and Natchez where home-cooked meals were impossible and low-calorie foods were elusive. You can still make the effort of course and find or choose something better for you, but I admit I indulged because I was on holiday. Though it sounds like you did too, Jodie!

The weekly challenge was a lovely idea and very important to those who suffer from low self-esteem tied to their weight, but for me I don't want to lose weight because I feel ugly or unattractive. It's not about looks, it's about general health, mostly related to my hypothyroidism and my high cholesterol.

This week classes at the gym were cancelled so I did not attend any, and I have not done any Jillian Michaels since my first day a couple week ago. I know, I'm terrible, but it's hard to find motivation when you absolutely loathe exercise (no exaggeration) and your personal trainer and motivator and... guilterer (sp?) has skipped town to South Carolina. I'm making excuses. I'M SORRY.

I can't promise to change my ways immediately as I have a lot of homework and a lot of deadlines this week, but hopefully soon I can work again on my motivation and determination. I'm still drinking my water! And I did a big shopping spree yesterday with lots of walking, so that counts right? Right? Okay yes, I also ate at an Indian buffet and had Red Robin, but I chose the smaller sized burger for once. I'm not sure if this counts as baby steps as much as they are tiny pigeon steps...

Another motivating factor did occur to me yesterday, however. I do not need a beach body for summer because I hate the beach and won't be going, BUT I am graduating in May. My pictures from graduation a couple years ago are of me with really short bleached hair and a slight pooch I forgot to suck in. I am going to aim to take a better picture this year. FIGHTING!

Eleana's Weekly Check-In

Weight: 68 kg (- 2 kg)
Waist: 30.25" (- 2.25)
Hips: 41.5"(- 2")
Thighs: 24" (+ 0.5")

Another week, another check in! And what a week it's been. As you can see from figures, while I am struggling to lose weight overall. I am still losing inches, so I'm not totally disheartened!

I can't really explain my lack of overall weight loss, not being an expert. I know that weight is very dependent on the day and how your body is in various things other than mass weight (e.g. water, time of the month etc.) but ultimately I do want to see those numbers go down to at least what they used to be.

Happily I am still seeing difference in my measurements (as long as I am doing it right, really hope I am). I have seen a difference to both my waist and hips to my delight, although once again I have gained in my thighs. I'm hoping this isn't a repeat of my karate years where I kept myself in good shape but got big uber thighs from it.

This week's challenge was the reflection chart. It was pretty much what I expected, I didn't really have any surprises. I woke up feeling tired and found it difficult to get out of bed, even after 8-10 hours sleep, but that's not unusual at all for me. About 30 minutes later I am awake and won't even want a nap for the rest of the day and will struggle to get to sleep in the evenings. I've never figured out why this is, but I've been like this so long I don't question it. I am usually in a good mood and not stressed, lucky! This week I had two major last minute homework assignments, but even this did not affect my eating. I was still under my calories. It did affect my exercise, however, as for Tuesday and Wednesday I just didn't have the time in the day to do exercise.

Thursday I had a very unusual very bad day for personal reasons. It really affected me that evening and the next morning. It, amongst other things, prevented me from working out on Thursday, and it almost stopped me from exercising Friday too, but I forced myself to join Jodie at Zumba. The bad episode continued into the afternoon until I was able to clear the air in the evening. I can now really see how Rachael struggles when things get on top of her. It really does affect your motivation, or even ability to stick to your plan.

This weekend I had a major spring clean which took me 4 hours on Saturday so, considering it involved a lot of physical exertion and time, I didn't exercise that day. Sunday was the only day where I was truly lazy and could have exercised, but didn't. Not bad for me! But room for improvement as always.

I wrote a piece on Baby Steps in changing your habits, which you can see by clicking here.

Considering everything I wrote in this post, I am not as disheartened about my efforts this week as I might have been, because I accept that sometimes life gets in the way and the small steps and changes I made this week still helped me work towards my goal. I am, however, going to restart Week 1 of the Ripped in 30 Challenge. I shall not be defeated!

Baby Steps In Changing Your Habits

I thought I'd write a post having had time to reflect on Rachael's post and our chat about being overwhelmed.

If you haven't seen her post, you can see it here: Feeling overwhelmed and how I'll make a change

This isn't my first go around for trying to diet and exercise with friends. In fact Jodie, Rachael and I tried to get fit and in shape last year together, although this just meant circuit training one evening a week and then having a home cooked meal together after. We even tried to do Couch to 5K, and I can't speak for the other girls, but I failed miserably at that by going running once and then never doing it again. Hopeless!

I don't know why my motivation is different now, seeing as I had my friends for support all the other times too, although none of them were quite as regulatory as Jodie is as my personal trainer (^_^). I think once you have made the decision to really commit to it, really really commit, it becomes a little easier.

Anyway, once you have made that commitment, you can absolutely throw yourself into it. You can eat healthy salads for all your meals, cut out your sugar and your dairy, exercise everyday, or twice a day. You can go nuts to see results. But for the average person, especially one who has not really dieted or exercised seriously before, and who also has their regular everyday busy life to contend with, this can be exceptionally hard and it may not be conducive to the needs of your important routines. Or maybe the very idea of beginning a diet or exercise regime scares the heck out of you because of all it will entail in changing your life?

Baby Steps cannot be underestimated as a legitimate dieting plan. If you cannot manage it all, if you cannot completely change your life to focus on your new exercise and calorie counting regimes, then baby steps are still going to make a huge difference in the end.

Goals

When we first came up with the idea of the pact, along with writing down our measurements and finding out our healthy weight through a BMI calculator, Jodie had us write down our goals. That's right, GOALS, plural. We could have more than one, and this could cover different areas. I had multiple weight goals I wanted to reach. There was my ultimate goal of 59kg which meant I had to lose 10kg/22lbs total. There was my middling goal of 63kg, which has been my normal weight for as long as I can remember. There was also an easier reachable goal of 66/67kg which would put me back into the "normal weight" section of the BMI calculator. That way, even if I was only able to make small changes to my life, I would have the opportunity of reaching at least one of my goals and feeling accomplished.

I also made other small goals such as being able to walk up the stairs to my office without wanting to sit down and wanting to huff and puff at the top, and learning to like at least 3 more vegetables. Simple, small goals that eventually can go a big way towards building your confidence and seeing results.

Changing Your Diet

So you're a picky eater (like me), or too busy with life things to really make time to cook and research healthy meals. Making big changes to your diet will then feel incredibly daunting as well as time consuming. But take baby steps! Look at what you're doing now, write down what you eat during the week, and see where you can make a few changes.

If you eat out a lot or get take out to indulge in big unhealthy portions of food, cut down on how often you do this, or what you choose off the menu. Many menus have Under 500 Calorie options now like Olive Garden, and Applebee's has a Weight Watchers symbol next to healthier food options. Look up the meals on your Fitness app!

If you eat a lot of sugary treats and are finding it hard to give them up (sugar is so addictive so cutting it out completely absolutely leads to withdrawal-like symptoms), cut down on what you do eat without cutting them out altogether. I still eat Cookies and Cream Hersheys Kisses now and again during the week, but I don't sit down and eat the whole bag as I used to, and I managed to cut out dessert by satisfying my sweet tooth after a meal with 3 or 4 Cadbury Mini Eggs.

Changing Your Exercise

I used to be incredibly lazy and take the elevator up 2 floors in my office building. I now always take the stairs. It's not much, but it'll make a small difference! I go to a couple fitness classes a week, but if you can't do that, do a DVD from home, or check out our exercise links on our website for free exercise videos. DVD sessions tend to be about 30 minutes long, but even if that is hard to make time for, online videos can last as long as 5 minutes!

So you can't work out everyday, or for hours. Small exercise sessions are going to help your endurance and fitness levels and may help you at least stop gaining weight, even if you cannot do them often enough to lose some quickly!

Thinking Long Term

Baby steps may not seem like much, but they start getting you used to thinking about fitness until it'll become natural to you, and natural to step it up a notch. Once you get used to drink 2 cups of water a day for a few weeks, it's going to be so much easier to up it to 3 or 4. Once you do some 5 minute exercises a few times a week, you'll start building up your endurance and fitness levels to be able to eventually do 10, 15, 20, 30 minute sessions and more often. If you cut down on your sugar and fatty foods intake, but not cut it out completely, when you find the time to dedicate to eating healthily it won't be so hard to give things up because you'll be halfway there!

You may not have the time, the energy, or the motivation now to completely change your life around, but start working now in small ways to change and then when time becomes available, it's going to be so much easier for you. Don't delay! Start today.

Eleana's Weekly Check-In

Longish weekly check in for me today, but I have a lot to get off my chest.
  • Weight: 68 kg (- 2 kg)
  • Body Fat:
  • Waist: 32.75" (+ 0.25")
  • Hips: 42"(- 1.5")
  • Thighs: 23.25" (- 0.25")
Well, this week appears to be a tricky week for losing weight and inches, but I was expecting that so I'm not exactly surprised. I think I am measuring the right place on my thigh though so that's an improvement! I took Jodie's advice from last week and now measure 10 inches up from my knee before I measure around my thigh, much easier.

I did two workouts this week, one Jillian Michaels session and one Zumba class and I can't remember the last time I did two workouts in a week so that is a big improvement for me. I'm about to go way beyond that and my comfort zone by joining Jodie in starting Ripped in 30 today. The idea both scares me witless because of me extreme dislike of exercising, but also invigorates me because it's a challenge and I love challenges.

Speaking of, I have very much improved in my water intake from before the challenge. I was drinking a cup of water maybe every few days if my body was lucky, but I now make sure I drink some everyday. I should have found out what constituted 50 oz or 1.5 litres at the beginning of the week as I was never aware of whether I was reaching my goal, so I only reached the goal number two days in the week. However, water is on my mind a lot more now and I always carry a water bottle with me.

I've been saying "no" to foods recently, which is something I've always struggled with. When my boyfriend asked me if I wanted to buy pancakes on my way home yesterday for breakfast, in the past my answer was always "abso-flippin-lutely", but this time I said no, I was going to stick to eating better and not adding things into my diet unnecessarily. Also, since my chat with Jodie after Zumba, I have been considering how sticking to my calories with bad, sugary, fatty foods is not enough to achieve weight loss. Therefore I have looked up some healthy recipes on SkinnyTaste.com and not only found things I liked (picky eater, remember?), but when I went out to purchase the ingredients I found that my overall shopping budget reduced to 3/5 of what it was when I bought mostly processed, pre-made foods. Result!

Hopefully all of this extra exercise plus eating right will make a big difference at my next weekly check-in. Here's hoping!

Losing fat, gaining muscle

So having collapsed on the sofa a few hours ago and having an unintentional nap, I'm now too awake to go to bed. I thought I would write a post instead!

In our post-Zumba chat (i.e. me putting off more library time), Eleana and I talked more about weight loss, by which I'm referring to the number on the scale. I think the first thing I'd like to say is that weight is really nowhere near as important as you think it is. We live in an age where we're inundated with advertisements for unhealthy diets - "Lose 10 lbs in a week!" - which encourages us to believe that weight is the be all and end all when it comes to health and fitness. Really, the diet industry has a lot to gain (no pun intended) from teaching us to pay attention to weight only, because there are lots of ways you can achieve short term weight loss, even if it's just water. But when it comes to sustainably losing fat and gaining muscle, it's much more than sticking to a certain number of calories and seeing the number go down.

It's important to track your progress, and weight is one way to do this of course. But it should be done in conjunction with body measurements, body fat percentage, and how you look and feel to yourself. If you weigh yourself one week and your weight has gone up, think about whether or not you had a healthy week. If you ate well, got some exercise and stayed hydrated, the chances are that you're retaining water due to sodium, menstruation, or any number of things. It's nothing to worry about if you fluctuate a bit. If you find that you are the same weight or higher at the end of a month, and it's consistently not going down, it's time to re-examine your diet. It's always a good idea to increase your activity levels, but diet is the most important aspect. You should aim for the vast majority of your foods to be non-processed, whole foods: fruit and vegetables, lean meat and fish, legumes, nuts and seeds, unrefined grains and fats.

I've already given you some info on how to interpret your body fat percentage. This website gives you information about how to figure out your lean body mass, set realistic goals, and track your fat loss/muscle gain. It's important to note that your lean body mass will go up as you gain muscle. (Although, since none of us are doing muscle-gaining programs, don't expect to see dramatic changes in the number. I worked mine out and I've gained roughly 1.5lbs of muscle in a month, which is only the result of not being very muscular to start out with. That amount will likely drop to more like 0.5lbs of muscle a month unless I actively try to gain it. More detail on that below.)

In order to achieve a slim, toned physique, we need to do two things: lose fat and gain muscle. If you have excess fat (i.e. above 20%), it is advisable to concentrate on losing that first, otherwise you won't see much difference. There is a lot of advice out there for how to lose fat, but to keep it basic: eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly (cardio + strength), stay hydrated, get enough sleep, keep stress levels down. Even if your main goal is to lose fat, you can and should still gain some muscle as you go, provided you are eating enough overall (and enough protein in particular) and doing challenging enough workouts, ideally with weights that are not super light. You will be much happier with your body if you tone it as you lose weight.

Once you have lost enough fat, you can concentrate on building muscle, which is a different process involving increased calorie intake and shorter and heavier workouts. I'm hoping to get to that stage later this year! I can write more about it then.

Okay, enough from me. Y'all post about your challenges and successes! I'll post the next weekly challenge on Sunday and check in Monday or Tuesday.
